5065 Adventure in Svaneti and Imereti Monasteries

7 Days  |  Georgia

About this trip

Experience a "Svaneti Adventure" with this 8-day trip focused exclusively on mountainous western Georgia. Starting and ending in Batumi, this itinerary avoids long transfers to the east (Tbilisi/Kakheti) to concentrate all energy on the most spectacular and alpine region of the Caucasus.

The Land of the Svans

After visiting the UNESCO monasteries of Kutaisi, we will set off towards the mountains. Svaneti is a land of myths, medieval towers and 5,000-meter peaks. We will spend several days exploring Mestia, the Chalaadi glacier and the incredible village of Ushguli, where traditional life endures in a high mountain environment.

Return to the Coast

The descent to the Black Sea coast is a journey in itself, passing through the Enguri dam and the forests of Samegrelo. We will visit the elegant Dadiani Palace in Zugdidi and the Dendrological Garden before returning to Batumi. This trip is the perfect option for lovers of wild nature, hiking and photography who prefer to delve deep into a specific region rather than spending many hours on the road.

The adventure will continue as we immerse ourselves in the depths of the earth in the famous Prometheus Cave. There we will traverse a labyrinth of underground halls decorated with majestic stalactites and stalagmites and, whenever conditions permit, we will complete the experience with a fascinating boat ride along the river that flows inside. A short distance away, the Academia de Gelati awaits us, a complex declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site that preserves invaluable frescoes and the history of the Georgian Golden Age. Subsequently, we will leave behind the city's surroundings to venture into the picturesque region of Racha, famous for its mountainous landscapes. There we will visit the Cathedral of Nikortsminda, a masterpiece of ecclesiastical architecture, recognized worldwide for the intricate beauty of its stone reliefs and magnificent decorated interiors. This cluster of villages, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, seems frozen in time with its dozens of medieval defensive towers. There, under the imposing shadow of Mount Shkhara, the highest peak in Georgia, we will walk along trails that bring us closer to the base of its glacier and share moments with locals who keep alive the ancient Svan culture. This viewpoint is famous for offering one of the most impressive panoramic views of the region. Once at the summit, and provided visibility allows, we will have the privileged opportunity to admire the imposing silhouette of the mythical Mount Ushba with its two characteristic peaks, as well as the elegant Mount Tetnuldi.
