Discover the "Wine and Fortresses Route" on an 8-day journey departing from Batumi. This itinerary is designed for lovers of military history and defensive architecture, taking us through the southern and central regions of Georgia. We'll start by leaving the coast to venture into the Samtskhe-Javakheti region, a land of fortresses and deep valleys.
We'll explore the Rabati fortress in Akhaltsikhe, a magnificently restored multicultural complex. The journey continues to Vardzia, the impressive 12th-century cave city, carved into the mountain by Queen Tamara. We'll also visit the Khertvisi fortress, one of the oldest in the country. In Tiflis, we'll discover the Narikala fortress that dominates the city.
The return westward includes stops in the ancient capital Mtskheta and Stalin's birthplace, Gori, guarded by its own citadel. In Kutaisi, we'll visit the UNESCO sites of Bagrati Cathedral and Gelati Monastery. Before returning to Batumi, we'll marvel at the Prometheus Cave. This journey offers a deep insight into how Georgia has defended itself and prospered throughout the centuries, combining history lessons with spectacular landscapes.
