About this trip

Follow the "Fire Trails" from the land of eternal fire in Azerbaijan to the medieval fortresses of Georgia. This 10-day journey begins with an immersion in Azerbaijani culture in Baku and the Absheron Peninsula, visiting the Ateshgah temple and the burning mountain of Yanar Dag. We will travel through the Lesser Caucasus mountains to Sheki, where we will sleep in an ancient caravanserai (if available) or visit the Palace of the Khans.

Georgia: Wine and Fortresses

Upon crossing into Georgia, we will be welcomed by the Kakheti region. We will visit the Alaverdi monastery and the citadel of Gremi. Tbilisi will serve as our base to explore the north, ascending to Kazbegi to see the glaciers. But the focus of this trip is southern Georgia. We will travel through Borjomi to Akhaltsikhe to visit the impressive restored fortress of Rabati, a multicultural complex with mosque, church and synagogue.

The Cave City

The highlight will be the visit to Vardzia, a monastery city carved into the rock in the 12th century that once housed thousands of monks. We will explore its tunnels and chapels with frescoes. On our way back to Tbilisi, we will stop at the fortress of Khertvisi. This itinerary is ideal for lovers of military history and defensive architecture, showing how these nations protected themselves throughout the centuries.

DAY 2: Bakú - Absheron - Bakú

DAY 3: Bakú - Gobustan - Bakú

DAY 4: Bakú - Shamaki - Sheki

After enjoying a delicious breakfast, we will begin our route by immersing ourselves in the mysticism of the Diri Baba Mausoleum. This fascinating 15th-century monument, partially carved into a cliff, will surprise us with its unique fusion of Islamic architecture and wild nature. DAY 5: Sheki - Lagodekhi - Kvareli - Alaverdi - Telavi

We will leave behind the historic city of Sheki to head to the border post of Lagodekhi. After completing the immigration procedures and stepping on Georgian soil, we will enter the fertile region of Kvareli to visit the famous Khareba Winery. We will travel along the historic Georgian Military Highway until we reach the fortified complex of Ananuri, whose medieval churches and towers are reflected in the turquoise waters of the Jinvali reservoir. DAY 8: Akhaltsikhe - Vardzia - Khertvisi - Tbilisi

Today, we will begin the day exploring the majestic Vardzia, an extraordinary 12th-century rock-hewn monastery-city that will transport us to the past. DAY 9: Tbilisi - Guided tour
